Many social media users have complained about the standard of driving at roundabouts with the most common complaint drivers using the outside lane to go straight on cutting in on drivers using the correct inside lane.

    Wayne from Lancashire
3 times I’ve nearly been wiped out today at roundabouts, all for exactly the same thing. Once at weld road roundabout at Southport on the coast road returning from Formby end, twice on the Plough roundabout, once from Preston New Road to Ralph’s wife’s lane, the other, coast road to a565 Southport road.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STRAIGHT ON 2nd EXIT IS LEFT HAND LANE APPROACH, UNLESS ROAD MARKINGS DIRECT OTHERWISE, NOT THE RIGHT HAND LANE THEN CUTTING INTO TRAFFIC GOING CORRECTLY DOWN YOUR LEFT.

a woman did it at every roundabout on Tom Benson way 1st one she nearly crashed then cars just dropped back. She was completely oblivious to it
The 12 o'clock rule should help
Generally speaking, if the exit you need to take is at 12 o’clock (straight ahead) or before, you would choose the left hand lane on approach to and on the roundabout. If your exit is at 1 o’clock or after, you would choose the right hand lane.
This wasn't the case of this 9 o'clock driver nearly taking out a motorbike on a roundabout on a dual carriageway...

Why not check up the Highway Code for roundabouts HERE

My favourite gripe are the drivers who go all the way around a roundabout in the outside lane. The outer lane should only be used for 1st or 2nd exits as far as I am aware.

You might just want to re-think that one.

Whenever my ex-wife said she wanted to learn to drive I'd take her around the infamous Key roundabout at Southport to terrify her - it worked and saved me a lot of extra expense !!

If people actually read the highway code and what is written in rule 186, on lanes, the only thing to say which lanes you 'SHOULD' be in ("SHOULD' defining a recommendation, NOT a rule!) is that if turning left you should be nearside lane and if turning right or going full circle, the right hand lane.

'When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise:-

    a. Select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout.
    b. You should not normally need to signal on approach.
    c. Stay in the lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout.
    d. Signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.

Wayne from Lancashire, could do with having a read of the highway code before commenting!

As for the attached picture taken from the Highway Code, that just shows the procedure for left and right turns, NOT for straight on.

Would it not be acceptable for green car to go straight on in the outside lane?

According to the Highway Code, yes. (But not according to Wayne from Lancashire)

Yes it would, I teach people to become Advanced Drivers, and that is quite acceptable.

Yep, as spotted by Anon earlier. I’m currently sat in the corner with my dunce’s cap on!

Lol - apparently it's getting a little crowded in that corner of late...... ;-)

The worst roundabout culprits I find, are the ones going straight on (i.e. blue car) carrying too much speed. Their speed causes them to 'flatten out' the roundabout, cutting through its lanes as they go.
